Every October, we take a moment to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The 2025 theme is Celebrating Value and Talent, reflecting what we see every day at Harc. People with disabilities bring talent, dedication, and purpose to the workplace. They deserve the opportunity to contribute and be included.
Currently, more than 80 percent of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed or underemployed. This isn't due to a lack of willingness or ability. Instead, opportunities are often out of reach. Rigid hiring processes, lack of support, and low expectations contribute to this issue. We see these barriers every day, and we work hard to help people overcome them.
This is not new to Harc. Employment has been a core part of our mission for almost 75 years. One of our earliest employment partnerships started more than 40 years ago with Robinson+Cole. They were the first site for one of our group-supported employment teams. That relationship continues today, and we were proud to honor and recognize them at Harc’s Gala this year.
Their partnership sends a powerful message. When employers invest in creating inclusive workplaces, everyone gains. It isn’t about charity; it’s about recognizing what people are capable of and supporting their success.
This month gives us a moment to reflect, but it is also a reminder that we still have more work to do. If you are an employer, I encourage you to take a closer look at your hiring practices. Ask who might be missing and what needs to change. Think about what roles could be a fit for someone with a disability. Be willing to ask questions and be open to different ways of working. You might be surprised by what becomes possible.
Our team at Harc is here to help. We are ready to support businesses that want to take the next step toward inclusion.
To our participants, job coaches, and employment partners, thank you! Let’s keep moving forward and continue to celebrate value and talent not only this month, but every month of the year.

Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month:
Empowering Individuals Through Harc’s Supported Employment Program
Each October, we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—a time to recognize the vital contributions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce and to promote inclusive employment practices. At Harc, we take great pride in supporting this mission every day through our Supported Employment Program, which equips the individuals we serve with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in the workplace.
Harc’s Supported Employment Program is designed to help individuals develop essential work-readiness skills and gain real-world experience. Through job coaching, skill-building workshops, and personalized support, participants are empowered to discover their strengths and pursue meaningful employment opportunities.
A key part of this effort includes the DDS Employment Exploration Options (EEO) and Employment Enrichment Services (EES) programs offered by Harc. These initiatives give individuals the opportunity to explore different types of work environments and career paths that match their interests and abilities. By experiencing a variety of job settings, individuals can make informed choices about their future and build the foundation for long-term success.
In addition, Harc has studied the job market to ensure that our training aligns with current workforce needs. We have developed job training modules that are practical, purposeful, and engaging—helping individuals gain the skills employers are seeking today.
Whether it’s learning workplace communication, time management, or specific vocational skills for various industries such as hospitality, clerical, warehouse, retail, café, etc., our programs are designed to open doors to meaningful employment and independence.
As we honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Harc remains committed to fostering an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to contribute their talents and thrive in the workforce. Together, we’re building a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Spotlight on Maureen Escoffrey: Celebrating Five Years of
Dedication and Compassion at Harc
This October, we proudly spotlight Maureen Escoffrey, who has been a valued member of the Harc family for five years! Maureen is one of Harc’s dedicated Job Coaches, working in our Life and Enrichment Program with our elderly program participants. Her warmth, compassion, and genuine care have made a lasting impact on the individuals she supports every day.
Maureen first learned about Harc through a friend who was already part of the organization. Before joining Harc, she spent 15 years as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Angel Touch Care, an assisted living and home health care service for senior citizens in Connecticut. Her background in elder care has been an incredible asset to Harc’s programs, and her passion for helping others shines through in all that she does.
When asked about her favorite part of her job, Maureen shared, “Showing kindness, attention, and love to the individuals—and I get it back from them.” That spirit of mutual care is what makes Maureen such a special part of our team.
One of her proudest achievements was winning the Storm-Appleton Award, a recognition that meant a great deal to her. “I felt special that my coworkers acknowledged me and saw my work. I’m so grateful for the award,” she said.
For Maureen, Harc is more than just a workplace—it’s a family. “Harc makes you want to come to work. I love coming in, I love the people I work with and take care of. We are a Harc family.”
Outside of work, Maureen is an active churchgoer and cherishes weekends spent with her three grandchildren, ages 9, 10, and 4.
We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our DSP (Direct Support Professionals) Week award recipients! Congratulations to Jonathan James and Angela Bogle, winners of the Nestor and Charles Corso Employee Recognition Awards, and to Maureen Escoffrey, winner of the Storm-Appleton Award.
Your hard work, dedication, and compassion are at the heart of everything we do at Harc. We are proud to celebrate you and grateful to have you as part of our Harc family!

Harc and Sole: Nate and Oneal Run for Harc at
the Eversource Hartford Marathon!
On Saturday, October 11th, the city came alive for the Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon, Team 26.2 Relay, and Charity 5K—and Harc was proudly represented by our very own “Harc and Sole” runners, Nate and Oneal!
Both Nate and Oneal participated in the 5K Charity Run, proudly “running for Harc.” What started as a lighthearted joke between the two about racing each other, quickly turned into a real plan. When they asked Harc’s President and CEO if the organization would sponsor them, the answer was an astounding “Yes!”
The pair described the experience as fun, exciting, and inspiring, enjoying the energy and camaraderie of being surrounded by so many passionate runners and supporters. Their dedication and enthusiasm perfectly embody Harc’s mission of empowerment, community involvement, and living life to the fullest.

Harc’s Annual Meeting: A Night of
Celebration, Connection, and Community Impact
On October 8th, Harc hosted its Annual Meeting at the J Under the Dome (formerly Hooker Live)—the same vibrant venue where last year’s gathering took place. The evening was filled with networking, delicious food, and good company, as friends and supporters of Harc came together to celebrate another successful year.
Guests were treated to a special highlight of the night—our very own signature cocktail, the “Harcvest Punch.” For every Harcvest Punch sold, $5 was donated to Harc, helping support our programs and the individuals we serve.
The speaking presentation portion of the evening recapped an incredible year across Harc’s many departments, including Residential Services, Birth to Three, Employment and Day Services, Human Resources, and our new Remote Supports Department. One of the most moving moments of the evening came from Amber Falvey, an individual in our Supported Employment Program, who shared a heartfelt personal story about her employment journey with Harc.

We also had the pleasure of recognizing some of the outstanding individuals and partners who have gone above and beyond in supporting Harc’s mission:
◼️Advocate/Legislator of the Year: Jillian Gilchrest
◼️Corporate Partner of the Year: NFP, Merrill Lynch, Enterprise
◼️Volunteers of the Year: Josh Gilmore, Josh Furchess
◼️Harculean Award: Maggie Carchrie, Dale Griffith (DJ Dale), Bruce Valicenti, Sue Polansky
They received a moment of applause along with a customized award featuring beautiful artwork handcrafted by Harc Artisan Program participants.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all who attended and supported this memorable evening. Your dedication and partnership help us continue to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live with dignity and purpose. Together, we look forward to finishing the year strong and continuing to build a brighter future for our community!

Pito and Cassandra Volunteer at St. Mary’s Nursing Home
We’re so proud to share that Pito and Cassandra, two participants from Harc’s Bulova Day Program, have secured a permanent volunteer opportunity at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in West Hartford!
In their new roles, Pito and Cassandra help transport residents from their rooms to the beauty salon—a small but meaningful act that brings smiles and comfort to the seniors they assist. Their kindness, patience, and enthusiasm have made a wonderful impression on both residents and staff at St. Mary’s.
This achievement is especially heartwarming because Pito and Cassandra have always enjoyed helping with activities within the Bulova program. Now, they’re able to share their caring spirits and skills out in the community—doing something they love while making meaningful connections and a positive difference in the lives of others.
At Harc, we celebrate these moments of growth, independence, and community connection. Congratulations to Pito and Cassandra on this exciting milestone!

Finding the Rhythm: Harc’s Bulova Program
Hosts Its First Therapeutic Drum Circle
This month, Harc’s Bulova program experienced something truly special—our very first Therapeutic Drum Circle with Tara Murphy of Ammaya Dance & Drum! The session was filled with rhythm, energy, and joy as both our individuals and staff joined together to feel the groove and spirit of the music.
Ammaya Dance & Drum offers creative and therapeutic dance and drum circles designed for people with disabilities. These sessions provide a unique and inclusive space where participants can express themselves freely through sound and movement. Drum circles are especially popular among neurodiverse communities, as they encourage self-expression, engagement, and connection in a fun, supportive environment.
During the session, participants jammed out creatively, learned simple rhythm exercises, and even created their own beats for the group to follow. It was a wonderful opportunity to release energy, lift spirits, and build a sense of community—all while learning the art of drumming.
The joy on everyone’s faces said it all—our folks truly enjoyed dancing, drumming, and connecting through music. Harc looks forward to continuing this exciting journey and hopes to host more therapeutic music sessions like this in the future. After all, at Bulova, we’re all about celebrating creativity, self-expression, and dancing to the beat of our own drum!
