About

Harc was founded in 1951 by visionary parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who recognized their children’s worth and value to society. These parents became fierce advocates, fighting against exclusion, isolation, discrimination, lack of opportunity, unemployment, and low expectations for disabled individuals. Their grassroots efforts forged lasting partnerships with generous individuals, foundations, corporations, and community leaders, raising the funds and awareness necessary to create life-changing programs.

Advocacy efforts and community-based services guide the people we support along the path toward building fulfilling lives of inclusion and meaning. Harc’s services begin at birth and continue throughout the lifespan, offering a range of support, enrichment, employment, and residential services across Greater Hartford.
