April is Autism Awareness Month, and while awareness is important, what truly matters is understanding and inclusion. This month, I had the privilege of attending a press conference at the State Capitol where Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz recognized, as Profound Autism Day in Connecticut, a declaration signed by Governor Lamont. It was a powerful moment that acknowledged the unique needs of individuals with profound autism while also affirming their dignity, worth, and right to support.
At Harc, we believe that every person on the autism spectrum deserves the opportunity to thrive. That is why we design programs and services that support individuals with all types of needs, from employment opportunities and life skills training to behavioral health and social inclusion. No two journeys are the same and our approach reflects that.
As more people share their experiences with autism, it is a chance for all of us to grow in understanding and empathy. Autism is not a label or a limitation. It is a part of who someone is. People with autism, including those with profound autism, are not statistics or headlines. They are people, our neighbors, co-workers, family members, and friends, with hopes, talents, and contributions that enrich our communities.
Let us use this month not only to raise awareness but to deepen our understanding. Let us listen, learn, and do the work of making our spaces more inclusive and supportive for everyone.

πAutism Awareness Month: Highlighting the Importance of
Inclusion and Acceptance

April is Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with autism. This month, organizations and advocates across the world work to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder, helping people recognize that it’s not a condition that can be cured but a spectrum of experiences that deserve respect, understanding, and inclusion.
We are committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with autism through programs that foster inclusion, independence, and personal growth. As part of its mission, We recently received an incredible opportunity to be featured on Fox 61, where we had the chance to share their important work with the community.
Fox 61 anchor Alyshia Hercules interviewed Amy Bouchard, Harc’s Board Certified Behavior Analyst, to discuss the challenges and triumphs of adults living with autism. During the segment, Amy explained how autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that it affects individuals differently, ranging from those with significant support needs to those who can live independently. Amy also emphasized that autism is not something that can be “cured,” but rather a lifelong condition that requires understanding, respect, and support.
Amy provided valuable insights into the importance of interpersonal interventions and support for individuals on the spectrum, focusing on how services like those offered by Harc can help adults with autism build skills and achieve their personal goals. Our Employment Program, which is designed to help individuals with autism gain meaningful employment, was highlighted as a powerful example of how inclusion can lead to greater independence and success for individuals with autism.
During the interview, Amy conducted a brief preference assessment with David, an individual who participates in our Employment Program. A preference assessment is a tool used by behavior analysts to determine what a person finds motivating or reinforcing, which can be used to guide skill-building and goal-setting. By observing David’s reactions to different items, Amy was able to identify what David enjoys most, which helps to inform the strategies used to support his growth and success in the workplace.
Our main message of Autism Awareness Month, especially as highlighted by the Fox 61 segment, is the importance of respect and inclusion. As Amy Bouchard pointed out, it is critical to understand that autism is not something that needs to be “fixed,” but rather a unique way of experiencing the world. The goal should be to provide individuals with autism the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to live fulfilling lives, while also fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding within our communities.

At Harc, we understand the importance of giving families the time and space they need to recharge, knowing that their loved ones are in a safe, supportive environment. That’s why we’re proud to offer Camp Bulova, a respite service for individuals over the age of 3, designed to give families and caregivers a much-needed break while their loved ones engage in meaningful, enjoyable activities.
Camp Bulova provides respite services during the school year to families in the Greater Hartford area, giving them the chance to take a break while knowing their children are in capable hands. The program runs one Saturday per month from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, offering a full day of activities and support. We accommodate up to 15 children (ages 3 to 21) each month, with the possibility of offering additional Saturdays based on available funding.

Our sliding scale payment structure ensures that families of all income levels can access this valuable service. Depending on the family’s income, some families may even qualify for free respite services.

To keep children active, engaged, and excited about coming to Camp Bulova, we offer monthly themed activities that cater to a variety of interests and abilities. These activities are designed to stimulate creativity, foster social connections, and provide opportunities for learning and growth in a fun, supportive environment.
In addition to our themed activities, we also provide music therapy sessions, which have been shown to be beneficial for individuals with a range of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
